Trail Pipe Install Instructions
Fitment - 4th Gen / 2024+ Tacoma
Note: You can do this install from the ground. To get the stock tailpipe out, you’ll need to lower the spare tire and may need to jack up the rear of the truck depending on the ride height or wheel/suspension setup. A lift makes the install much more straightforward.
Tools Needed
- 3/8" ratchet
- 6" extension
- 14mm socket
- 14mm wrench (a ratcheting one helps)
- Torque wrench
- Spare tire wrench (comes with the truck)
- Jack and 2 jack stands (for a ground install)
- Optional: exhaust hanger pliers, or a pry bar and silicone spray
Prep
- Park on a flat, level surface and let the exhaust cool completely.
- Find the spare tire wrench. It’s behind the rear seat on the passenger side, wrapped in a fabric bag. The factory jack is stored there too; use it if you don’t have a floor jack.

- Put the spare tire wrench together. Insert the hook end through the access hole in the rear bumper until it catches on the spare tire winch. Turn it counterclockwise to lower the spare. The spare doesn’t need to come off completely, but doing so can make it easier to pull the stock exhaust out later.

- Jack up the rear of the truck a few inches and set it on jack stands. Lift and support it on the frame, not the rear axle. Letting the axle hang down gives you more room to pull the stock pipe out over it.
-
- Note that this step might not be necessary on some vehicles depending on your suspension ride height or wheel and tire setup. If you're unsure, we recommend using the jack anyway. Skip this step if you’re on a lift.

Remove the stock tailpipe
- With a 14mm socket or wrench, remove the two nuts holding the rear section of the stock exhaust to the muffler.

- Remove the front and rear rubber hangers from the tailpipe. Exhaust hanger pliers make this easy. Without them, use a pry bar and a little silicone spray on the rubber.

- Pull the tailpipe back off the muffler studs. Leave the gasket on the muffler. Work the pipe up over the rear axle, around the lowered spare, and out.

Install the trail pipe
- Push the rubber hanger back onto the trail pipe’s hanger rod while aligning the flange holes with the two muffler studs. The exhaust outlet should point down towards the ground. The rearmost stock hanger (behind the axle) isn’t used anymore,

- Thread both nuts on by hand.

- Tighten both nuts to 28 ft-lb. The gasket sits slightly proud of the stock flange, so a small gap between the flanges is normal.

Wrap up
- Reattach the spare tire if it was removed, and turn the spare tire wrench clockwise until the spare is pulled up tight. Put the tools back in the bag behind the seat. Take the truck off the jack stands and lower it.

- Start the truck and check for exhaust leaks at the flange and for any contact or rattles. Check the nuts again after the first few heat cycles.
